Mom grew up in Elmwood and had great friends and loved sports – especially volleyball. She went to Lord Selkirk school and finished at Tech Voc high school. After marrying Dave and welcoming their son Bill the family moved to Fort Garry where they welcomed their daughter Joy. Then moved to Sydney Nova Scotia, St John’s Newfoundland, then back to East Kildonan and finally back to the house she grew up in Elmwood so she could care for her father next door. It is there that she cultivated a large flower and vegetable garden and loved sitting out on the deck.
She loved her brother, sister and cousin and they spent great times at the cabin in Winnipeg Beach swimming, going to the dance hall, playing bingo and riding the roller coaster. Mom worked at Imperial Oil, Kip Kelly, Canadian Standards Association and then came out of retirement to work with her sister and brother in-law at their family Chiropractic practice. There were too many to list, but mom loved animals of all kinds and had at least one cat and dog for most her life – this carried on in her care home where she was always clutching a stuffed cat.
Most will know that mom gave and sacrificed everything so she could raise her children and then grandchildren well into her 70’s – this is probably why she was so fit and mobile!
After a very healthy life she developed Alzheimer’s/Dementia and spent 10 years at Beacon Hill Lodge and succumbed to influenza. We can’t thank the staff enough for all the love and care they gave mom especially Susannah!
As per her wishes, mom was cremated, and this summer family will gather and spread her ashes at Winnipeg Beach. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Mom you are back with your family and pets and have that sharp mind back, we love you and miss you.
