Gary Schinkel

Obituary of Gary Donald Schinkel

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Donald Schinkel on January 28, 2025, at Concordia Hospital, at the age of 63. Since his cancer diagnosis in 2020, he fought a long, hard battle for himself and his family.

Gary was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Jean Schinkel, and brother Ken. He leaves behind his loving wife Colette, his son Adam (Tricia), and his daughter Justine (Eddie).

He sadly leaves behind his 5 grandchildren, Austin, Emory, Carter, Kolton, and Olivia. He also leaves behind his brother Brian (Maria), brother-in-laws Guy (Chippy), Mike (Susan), and Jim. Gary also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, including his favorite niece Samantha, and many great friends especially his best friend of over 40 years, Larry (Tammy).

Gary was born on February 16, 1961, in Winnipeg, MB, and married to the love of his life Colette, with whom they shared almost 45 years of marriage; they were true soulmates and partners in everything.

He was a devoted father and extremely proud of his two children and all they have accomplished, including blessing him with 5 beautiful grandchildren whom he absolutely adored.

Gary cherished spending time with his family and friends and his face would light up when the family was all together. In his later years, he developed a deep passion for painting and found joy in creating art. He was also an avid sports fan, never missing a chance to cheer on the Winnipeg Jets and watching football.

Gary had a long career working at Safeway starting at the age of 17 as a grocery clerk before moving his way up to being manager of the IT department. During his time working at Safeway, he made many friends that he was able to help throughout the years.

A Celebration of Life will be held on February 16, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Green Acres Funeral Home to honour and remember Gary on what would have been his 64th birthday.

Gary’s kindness, laughter, and love will be deeply missed but forever in our hearts.

We would like to thank Dr. Wong, Dr. Dayyat, Dr. Bieko and all the wonderful staff in the PANSU ward at Concordia Hospital, especially Prima.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gary’s name to Cancer Care Manitoba.
