Obituary of Hero "John" Laninga

It is with profound sadness, but with the knowledge of a greater eternal life, that we announce the passing of Hero “John” Laninga surrounded by love on Saturday, February 22, 2025 after a courageous and valiant two-year battle with cancer.

Born in Doorn, Netherlands, he is the son of the late Hero and Henny Laninga.  He is survived by his wife and best friend of 63 years, Gerda (Koene) and his four devoted children, Harold (Debbie), Jack (Sandra), Heather Breadner (Mark) and Jeff (Delia). He was a loving and encouraging Opa to 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  He was also loved by his sisters and their families, as well as Mom’s family.

Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased by his parents-in-law; great-granddaughter, Millie; sister Evelyn; and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Dad joined East Kildonan Police in 1957 as a 17 year old cadet.  Upon Winnipeg’s amalgamation in 1974, Dad became a member of the Winnipeg Police Department.  Dad retired in 1990 having attained the rank of Inspector.

We as a family have felt blessed by all of your notes, well wishes, visits, rides for Mom, and the love expressed for Dad.

Thank you, Dad for the incredible example of faith and how to live that out as a husband, father and grandfather.  You displayed these qualities throughout your life and the time leading to your passing.

Dad’s dad used to say “Everyone needs a Hero.”  Heaven has gained our Hero.  We love you, Dad.

The family acknowledges and thank Drs. Embil, Lipschitz, Jaeger and family friend, Ray Postuma, as well as the 5th floor South staff at The Victoria General Hospital for the exceptional care, support and counsel provided to Dad and our family over the past years.
