Obituary of Emil Ehmann
September 17, 1934 – March 9, 2025
With deep sorrow the Ehmann family announces the passing of Emil on March 9, 2025, at the grand age of 90 years. Emil, affectionately known as Yogi passed away at St. Boniface Hospital after a courageous battle with numerous health issues. Emil’s tenacity and never give up attitude was evident during his health battles time and time again.
Emil was predeceased by his parents, sisters and brothers. He leaves to mourn numerous nieces and nephews.
Emil was born in Poland to German parents and was part of a large family. At an early age Emil looked out for his family and siblings being a protector and provider. Emil worked numerous jobs in Europe during a very difficult time making sure his family was safe and cared for. Emil came to Canada in the early 1950s and began his proud Canadian life with his siblings in Manitoba. Emil worked construction and on farms in rural Manitoba. Emil began his career at the Manitoba Rolling Mills where he worked for over 40 years. Legend has it that his co-workers would watch and be in awe of the strength of the larger-than-life German powerhouse, as Yogi would load steel onto trucks.
Emil fell in love and married Anne welcoming the Beckmann family into the Ehmann family with his large open arms and larger heart. Emil and Anne made their home in the North End of Winnipeg. Together they travelled the world and enjoyed family time at Petersfield with the Beckmann, Leiman, Foss and Ehmann families. Emil enjoyed being with his nieces and nephews joking around always having time to remind his nephews of his superior strength.
Emil had immense pride in everything he did in his appearance, family, work and his home. Emil always had time to help friends and neighbours often seen cutting grass or shovelling sidewalks in the neighbourhood. Emil loved being with buddies Harry, John, Roy, neighbours and numerous other friends; often seen enjoying a story or two along with a beverage at many local North End watering holes.
Later in life Emil met his friend Phyllis. The two enjoyed many special times, often travelling on many road trips together.
After retiring Emil settled into River Ridge Retirement Home and made more friends as he always did. Emil was a fixture walking the halls and being part of the security crew at the front doors with Ben. Emil truly loved being at River Ridge, joking with his friend Riley and especially chatting with the ladies Rachel, Sharon and Lori. Thanks to everyone at River Ridge for making this his home and the extra effort it took to keep it his home as long as possible. Emil appreciated your efforts and always will. Emil was always grateful for all the help from his nieces and nephews especially the care provided by Doris and Elliott. Emil and the Ehmann family are eternally grateful to the Leiman family who helped Emil, and the Ehmann family begin their journey in Canada. Thank you to all the medical staff who helped Emil as he courageously battled his health issues.
Yogi will be truly missed but never forgotten.
Yogi I will say hi to the boss for you as always.
Cremation has taken place. Emil will be interred at Glen Eden Cemetery, West St. Paul at a future date.
