Obituary of Dr. Lloyd Richard Moorhead

Dr. Lloyd Moorhead, a long-time respected chiropractor, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend passed away at his home in Winnipeg March 29, 2025. Dad’s health started failing 25 months ago, where he fought hard, but his body eventually grew tired, and he just didn’t have the fight in him anymore. Dad just celebrated  his 91st birthday.

Born in Lansdowne, Ontario, to parents, Gordon, and Annie (McCready). Lloyd is survived by brothers Ernie, and Lorne as well as several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, sister Augusta and brothers Jim, Alban, and Eric.  Dad left the family farm in Lansdowne, Ontario with big city dreams. Dad attended CMCC in Toronto, Ontario, where he graduated from chiropractic college in 1959. Dad left Ontario with his lifelong friends (John and Ann Kos), where the two friends our dad and John set up their first chiropractic practice in Winnipeg in the St. James area. A few years later Dad pioneered his own chiropractic practice in Transcona 60 plus years ago, until his forced retirement in 2023. The family business was closely managed by our mom managing every aspect of the family business up until her death in 2000. Rick followed along in his dad’s footsteps (as a chiropractor) joining the family practice, present to this day, and daughter Kimberly practicing as a massage therapist until 2013. Having his children work along side of him was a highlight for our dad. When our mom passed away in 2000; it forever changed our world, it took dad time to find his footing again after he lost his life partner, as well as his business partner.

Our Dad had a very strong work ethic, he always had an enduring passion for the sciences, always reading and expanding his knowledge. His belief was that every patient deserved to be treated with dignity, explanations, knowledge,  this was eminent in his treatments and the empathy he had for every single patient he treated. During his working years he had served time on the chiropractic association board, he was also a long-time member of the Kinsmen Club.

Dad forever had a passion for playing, coaching, watching hockey, he was a very gifted skater and hockey player.  We hold many memories skating at Bronx Park,  spending time at the family cottage, playing catch, roller blading, boating, BBQing and endless amounts of time spent cutting grass.  By far his favourite hobby would be boating; spending most of his time floating on Lake Winnipeg while at the family cottage, at home we would boat on the Red River (weekends boating to the Forks for a Saturday morning breakfast)  and also spending time boating on the water at the Lake of the Woods. Dad also had a deep love for sweets in which the love for maple syrup, he would put it on or add it to almost anything.

Known as Pops to his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren when dad spoke of his grandchildren and great grandchildren it always brought a smile to his face. When they were babies, he was always the first person to want to hold them. Although, he didn’t easily show his affection, he loved and cherished every one of his family members very much.

Dad was predeceased by his wife, Connie (2000). He is survived by his children, Richard Moorhead, and Kimberly Peterson (Paul), grandchildren, Danielle and Gage, Alyssa (Jaryn) and Abbey (Jeff), along with four great-grandchildren (Jaxon, Kolton, Ridley, Clementine).

We would like to thank the numerous homecare staff and nurses for their care throughout these past 25 months for our dad. An extra special thanks you to Nurse Practitioner Marvin de Castro for your care, compassion, and guidance throughout this trying time, you’re amazing.  Special thank you to life-long friends John and Ann (who are family) for checking in, visiting with and loving our dad, he cherishes you both!

There will be a private celebration of life for our dad, once boating season begins! Sail away dad, it’s time to embark on the next phase of the journey: Bon Voyage, until we meet again…….
