Obituary of June Evelyn Leathwood

June Evelyn Leathwood

It is with heavy hearts that the Leathwood family announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, June Evelyn Leathwood (nee Christie) on April 9, 2025. June peacefully left this earth at the age of 90, surrounded by her children in her home. Mom was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 28, 1934, to Hope Ambrose Christie and Dorthy Aimee (Dawson) Christie. She was predeceased by her daughter, Rachel Ann and husband, George Stanley Leathwood (Sandy), as well as her three siblings, Yvonne Knight, Dawson (Alan) Christie and Gail Segal; and grandchild, Bryce. She is survived by her sons Terrence Leathwood (Edna), Dean Leathwood (Julie), and Kevin Leathwood (Teresa), and her daughter Kim Little (Kenneth), 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

June worked many secretarial positions, most notably in the Justice Department of the Provincial Government. She made many long-term friendships throughout the years and will be sadly missed by her lifelong school friends.

June and Sandy loved their residence at Hillside Beach, Manitoba and wintering in the Southern state of Texas. She passed onto her children her love of nature, and wintering in warmer climates. June’s care and love was communicated to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren through her many gifts and support. June was very strong-willed, independent and hardworking, qualities that she gifted to her four children. She had a passion for quilting, sewing, knitting, crafting, and camping. She loved her chihuahuas, but any dog would do. She offered a helping hand to those less fortunate. Her laugh could fill a room and family gatherings were not complete without her fabulous baking.

Mom’s loved ones will remember her dearly and wish her all the best on her next journey.

As per June’s wishes, no formal service will be held. A private family interment at Glen Eden Cemetery will follow at a later date.

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sun on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there; I did not die.
