Obituary of Herta Eleanor Toews

With sadness, the children of Eleanor "Ellie" Herta Toews, share that she passed away on April 13, 2025, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Born on May 8, 1950, in Steinbach, Manitoba she spent most of her life in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be greatly missed.

Ellie's greatest joy in life was her family. She adored her children, Forrest Matt, Carla and Adam, and her grandsons, Joshua and Lucas. She cherished every moment spent with them, and her love will forever live on in their hearts. She was predeceased by her sister, Kathy; her parents, John and Herta as well as her infant daughter, Tanaya. She also leaves behind her brothers, Lorne (Myrna) and Marlow (Sena) and nieces and nephews. She shared a special bond her with her niece, Rachael. They mourn her loss with us.

In her younger years, Ellie embarked on a brief but impactful missionary journey in Indonesia. This experience shaped her caring nature, and she carried this spirit with her throughout her life.

Ellie raised her children in Steinbach and Winnipeg with their father, instilling in them the values of the importance of family, kindness, and boldness. She later worked tirelessly as a single parent in a variety of jobs, and when she retired, she felt she’d had a good and simple life. Her kids will miss her laughter, her phone calls, and annual birthday song.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of the 2 West floor at Riverview Health Centre for their unwavering kindness and exceptional care during Ellie's time there. Their compassion provided comfort and support during a difficult time. They described her as a firecracker, which was always true about her! Diagnosed in October 2021 with breast cancer, she fought bravely for as long as she could.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date to honour Ellie's life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made to Breast Cancer Canada in her memory and to support cancer research.

Mother, mom, mumsy. We love and miss you. Auf wiedersehen.
