Obituary of Anthony Mandarano

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, husband, brother, uncle, great-uncle, cousin, and friend, Anthony (Tony) Mandarano, on April 27, 2025, at the age of 52, following a lengthy illness. Tony was born in Winnipeg on April 23, 1973, and called the city home for his entire life. He will be dearly missed.

Tony was known for his cheerful, easygoing nature and his love of making people laugh–often with a perfectly timed corny joke. Despite facing ongoing health challenges for many years, he remained a generous, kind, and remarkably positive person. His warmth and quiet strength left an impression on those who knew him, and his great laugh will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

After graduating high school, Tony worked in retail at various stores, including Eaton’s, Sears, The Bay, and Princess Auto, where he built a lengthy career in merchandising and customer service. He brought a friendly presence and a strong work ethic to every role. Outside of work, Tony had a deep love for wildlife and nature. He enjoyed taking road trips and hikes around Manitoba with his wife and dog, traveling more broadly when he could, and watching sports. He also had lots of fun driving–especially his K-car. A true foodie, Tony had a special appreciation for Italian, Polish, and diner food, and a soft spot for ice cream and Hawaiian pizza. He was fond of bright colors, fancy watches, and dressing up for special occasions. He cherished the various pets and dogs he shared life with over the years. Tony would no doubt hope that we continue to find joy in life – and remember him with a smile the next time we hear a truly terrible pun.

Tony is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Maggie, and his three sisters: Bartola, Rosa (Tom), and Caterina (the late Joe). He also leaves behind six nieces and nephews – Sarah, Jennifer, Salvo, Frank, Susy, and Mary – and six great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as a host of other family members and friends, all of whom he valued greatly. He was predeceased by his mother, Maria, father, Francesco, and brother, Orazio. Family was incredibly important to him, and he remained close to them throughout his life.

Tony was baptized in 1988 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and his faith was a source of great strength for him. He held dear the hope of future paradise conditions when he would see his lost loved ones again and regain his health. We cannot wait to see Tony again in the new world, where his health challenges will be a distant memory (Rev 21:3,4; Isa 33:24; John 11:25).

The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported Tony throughout his journey, offering love, care, and kindness when it mattered most. We also appreciate the care provided by the doctors and nurses at Riverview Health Centre, the HSC Kidney Transplant Clinic, and the Kildonan Medical Clinic.

According to Tony’s wishes, there will be no formal service.

A private interment will take place at the cemetery with close family in attendance.
