Obituary of Susan Neufeld
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Neufeld on July 24, 2024 at Holy Family Home.
She is survived by her daughter Judith (Ray); grandson Jon (Carlee); daughter-in-law Sandy; step children Warren (Rose) and Viann; sister-in-law Shirley and their children. Susan will also be missed by many surviving nieces, nephews and friends.
Susan was predeceased by her parents, brothers and sisters; son Patrick (2023); husbands Jake and Ted; step children Dennis and Joanne.
Susan was born near Altona, Manitoba on the Weidenfeld family farm of her parents John and Margaretha (Wiebe) Friesen. Her 11 siblings welcomed her into the family in 1925 and she was followed a year later by Peter, the last of John’s children.
Always very quiet in school, Sue was patient, caring and easy going. When she was ten, the family moved to a small farm near Plum Coulee. In her early teens, she was mortified by a growth spurt, six inches in one year, that left her solidly built and towering above her classmates. She enjoyed playing baseball and excelled in art classes. As an adult, she found great pleasure in painting with water colours.
Sue met Jake Neufeld in the Plum Coulee High School and they were married in 1945 when Sue was 20. They settled in Altona where their son Patrick was born in 1947. They later moved to Winnipeg where Jake was a bus driver for 30 years, and it was here that their second child Judith was born in 1951. Sue worked as a retail clerk at Zellers for 15 years. The couple moved to Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba in 1984 when Jake retired.
After Jake died in 1989, Sue moved back to Winnipeg and in 1992, married Jake’s widowed brother Ted Neufeld, who died in 1998. In 2001, Sue lived in a comfortable apartment in the North Kildonan area of Winnipeg and saw her children regularly. She also visited often with her older sister Nita (Friesen) Brown in the Donwood Nursing Home nearby.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will take place at a later date.
Special thanks to staff at Holy Family Home for the excellent care of Mom.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s name can be made to Holy Family Home Recreation Department, or a charity of one’s choice.
