The Big Man in the Small Car
For Bruce Pirnie Athlete and Coach 1942-2024
Coach Pirnie drove up as we distance runners waited
easing his Olympic sized frame out with an easy grace
long ago at the summer Legion Track Camp
and we believed the big man in the small car
You’ll love the throwing events he promised you’ll see…
We still throw shot put at some family reunions
and using Coach’s classic technique I win a few
my wife complains about the holey grass but…
Could it have been a legacy of Coach’s magic that
made our Paris Hammer Throwers’ spins even more perfect
that made Canada into the Olympic Hammer power
somehow the big man in the small car still cheering us on?
From an old Camper Ron Romanowski

All during our 65-year friendship, since high school, Bruce was my "go to" for sharing news both good and bad. He was in all ways but sharing the same mother and father – my older brother. 17 years ago he came to New Hampshire to walk me down the aisle and toss me (yes, practically throw me!) to my husband, Jim. His words were, "I've watched out for her for the past 48 years, now you take her ... she's yours!" His brother Gus was also a big part of our wedding. I mainly knew Bruce away from his world of athletics, although I did attend the Olympics in Montreal in 1976 and saw him in the shot put. I've loved his whole family for so many years that I cannot remember when I didn't know them. I'm heartbroken that I can't call and expect to be tormented by him anymore. I'll always miss his greeting, "Hello Child!" So, bye for now, Bruce ... rest while you can, because I know where you are!!! All my love, Betsey Child

M thoughts and prayers go out to the Pirnie family. Bruce was a kind soul who I am blessed to have been able to call my friend. He was a gentle giant, goofy and fun, and always gave great hugs. I was fortunate to spend time with Bruce whether it be working together or golfing out in Gimli. He loved working with athletes and coaches and sharing his knowledge and experience in athletics, but also life lessons he learned along the way. More importantly, he loved his family. He would often speak about his daughters and would do so with great love and pride. I am a better person for knowing him. He will be missed.

Bruce was one of my activity teachers at U of M. He was well respected and loved. He always had time for coaches, whether it was to have a look at one of my athletes for error correction, or getting help for elite athletes ready for the next level. Always kind, always cheerful, and always made you feel greeted, welcomed, and appreciated. I will miss you big guy.

My deepest condolences to the Pirnie family ❤️ My daughter had the honour of being coached and mentored by Bruce in the Interlake. Peyton loved Bruce and recently had to write about her coach/mentor in her biography for the 2024 MB Games. I have attached it. Thinking of you all.

I worked with Bruce at the National Coaching Institute and when he moved on to work at Athletics Canada I was selected as his replacement. He left large shoes to fill both figuratively and literally! I will miss my friend.

Condolences to the Pirnie family. Mr Pirnie was my track Prof at University of Manitoba in the late 80’s. He was down to earth and really connected with his students. I would run into Bruce periodically over the last 30 years and he would always stop for a quick conversation. He was a great athlete, coach and mentor, he will be missed.

Mr. Pirnie was my phys ed teacher in grade 9 at Golden Gate junior high in 1967. A mountain of a man but easy to talk to and immense patience. I was quarterback of out flag football team and he taught me how to properly throw a football. "Snap it from behind your ear, son" he'd say. Also our track coach and he got me to develop a kick toward the finish of my mile and half mile runs. It worked as I set a St. James record for both which stood for quite a while. Always thought he should have played for the Bombers. Wonderful guy and huge loss to all that knew him. My sincerest condolences. - Gary Hanson

I'm very saddened to hear of "Mr. Pirnie's" passing. He was the gym teacher at the high school I went to in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at Nelson McIntyre. He was absolutely the nicest soul you could ever meet. Even though I wasn't athletically inclined, he was always polite and friendly towards me. An upstanding human, for sure. The world definitely got a lot dimmer without him in it. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends, and the many hearts he touched throughout his amazing life. I'm proud to say I met him and knew him in high school. Rest in Paradise, Mr. Pirnie. You earned it.
