Obituary of Ashok Vasant Athavale
Ashok Vasant Athavale passed away peacefully on December 4, 2024, at the age of 79, surrounded by family. Born in Mumbai, India, on May 28, 1945 to Vasant and Jesse (nee Augustine) Athavale, Ashok lived a life full of laughter, curiosity, and commitment to others.
He is survived by his son, Erik Athavale (April Miller), his daughter, Meghan Athavale (Alistair Croll), and his grandson, Dylan Bodner (Julianna Young). He also leaves behind a sister, Hira Dalaya, brothers, Sudhir and Madhu Athavale, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Ashok was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Emily Rak, his sister, Manda Canaran, and his brothers, Vijay and Giresh Athavale.
Ashok spent his career as a guidance and grief counselor at Jefferson Junior High and Garden City collegiate; and before that in the Mystery Lake School division in Thompson. He also worked closely with First Nations communities in northern Manitoba, Terrace Bay, and Arviat. Ashok believed in equity and the power of community, and he generously gave his support and time to many not-for-profit organizations, including MCIC, the United Nations, and Save the Children.
Whether he was chatting with friends, colleagues, or strangers, Ashok had a way of making others feel heard. He was quick with a smile and always open to a good conversation. His travels—ranging from family road trips to longer journeys with his wife, children, and grandson—reflected his adventurous spirit and appreciation for humanity's diverse cultures, especially when delicious food and interesting people were involved.
In his later years, Ashok faced dementia, diabetes, and heart disease with courage and humor. He stayed true to his values to the very end, teaching those around him the importance of listening and understanding. He will be greatly missed.
At Ashok’s request, no funeral will be held.
