Obituary of William Alexander Bowman

On December 6, 2024, Bill passed away peacefully in his bed at Deer Lodge Centre.

He leaves behind his daughters Tracy (Gerry) Woods and Ashley Bowman; his beloved grandchild, Noah Bowman; his sister Bonnie Gudmundson (Al); and his best friend, Shirlee Zest. Bill was predeceased by his father, Dudley Bowman, in 1981, and his mother, Mary “Mae” Bowman, in 1989.

Bill’s life was one of passion, adventure, and deep connections. At 25, he purchased a tiny cottage in Winnipeg Beach, which became a summer sanctuary for entertaining friends and creating cherished memories.

Among Bill’s many friends, Ralph Masi stood out as a lifelong confidant and barber. Since their first meeting in 1974, Ralph remained a steadfast companion, ensuring Bill’s hair always looked just right, even during his time at Deer Lodge.

In 1978, Bill met Wilma while working at Loblaws. Together, they raised two daughters and enjoyed 27 years of marriage. Family weekends and summer holidays at Winnipeg Beach were highlights of their life together, along with countless family vacations to destinations like California, Disney, Arizona, British Columbia, Wisconsin Dells, and beyond.

In 1992, Bill purchased the love of his life a 1979 Red Corvette, this was his everything and he took very good care of her.

Bill and Wilma joined the Corvette Club of Manitoba in 1993 embarking on memorable road trips to places like the Black Hills, South Dakota; Bowling Green, Kentucky; and Springfield, Illinois. Bill’s devotion to Corvettes was unparalleled, amassing a collection that included die-cast models, jackets, toolsets, and even Corvette-themed perfume and shower curtains.

After his divorce, Bill poured his energy into his work as a dedicated meat manager at Loblaws, a role he held from 1985 until his retirement in 2014. Incredibly, he took only three sick days throughout his entire career. Outside work, he could often be found at Smitty’s Lounge on Regent, unwinding with friends.

Becoming a grandfather in 2004 was one of Bill’s greatest joys. His grandson, Noah Bowman, brought him immense happiness, and Bill lit up whenever Noah visited.

In 2005, Bill met Shirlee, who became his loving companion and softened his edges. Together, they embraced family celebrations and traveled extensively across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. Winters in Dunnellon, Florida, were particularly special, as Bill formed lasting friendships with people from all walks of life.

Shirlee’s children Jordan and Jeremy also accepted and loved Bill.

Special memories of Jordan and Cheryl’s wedding October 13, 2018 and the birth of Jordan and Cheryl’s daughter Remi October 9,2019, she brought a sparkle to Dad’s eye every time he saw her or heard her name.

In 2018, Bill moved in with Tracy and Gerry to accommodate his love of travel. He proudly walked his Tracy down the aisle in 2019, looking dashing and filled with pride.

By 2020, Bill began experiencing challenges that would lead to a diagnosis of a major neurological cognitive disorder with Lewy body characteristics in late 2021. Despite the progression of his illness, Tracy and Gerry devoted themselves to his care until he transitioned to Deer Lodge in October 2022.

Bill faced his diagnosis with grace, often reflecting, “I’ve had a good life. I’ve traveled, I’ve loved, and I’ve lived life well.” Even in his final days, he recognized his daughters and expressed his love, leaving them with precious, lasting memories.

Bill’s family is profoundly grateful for Shirlee and her sister, Lynda, for their unwavering devotion, as well as the many friends and extended family who offered love and support.

Bill’s family also thanks the staff at Deer Lodge Tower 7 for the care and friendship over the last few years.

As per Bill’s wishes, he was cremated, and a private family burial will take place in the summer of 2025. He requested no formal funeral or memorial, and his family is honoring that decision.

Bill’s life was rich in love, laughter, and memories, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
