Obituary of Lewine Ann Moskaluik (nee Schachtel)

Lewine Ann Moskaluik passed away in Winnipeg on April 14th, 2021 at the Grace Hospice, after going through cancer treatments in 2020 that left her esophagus severely damaged causing her an eating disorder. Lewine never really recovered from her treatments, adding on the restrictions of the pandemic, it was very hard on her, however she was strong and positive throughout. Lewine is survived by three brothers Ray (Janet) Schachtel, their daughters Karen and Wendy; Vince (Kathy) Schachtel, their sons Darren and Rick; Elmer (Sharon) Schachtel, their daughter Leann and their son Cory; niece’s Linda Haney and Lisa Kozun; and nephews Danny Kozun and Tony Kozun. Lewine was predeceased by her parents Vera and Gottlieb Schachtel; nephew Vernon Schachtel; and foster brother Lawrence (Regina) Kozun. Lewine was born in Holdfast, Saskatchewan on August 24, 1939 with blond hair and blue eyes. She was raised in Quinton, Saskatchewan where she completed her high school. From there she went to the Sacred Heart Academy in Regina where she took Administration and Secretarial training. Upon completion she started working for the Royal Bank of Canada. Lewine transferred to the main RBC Branch in Winnipeg working in the Foreign Exchange Department for eight years. She started to get itchy feet and decided she wanted to travel. She quit her job and set out on a year long journey where she travelled throughout the Scandinavian and European countries including England, Spain, Italy and Africa. She traveled with a group of friends from Canada, learning and living with the different cultures. An experience and time of her life she loved to talk about. Upon her return to Canada, no job and out of money she started job hunting. She landed a job with Cunningham Business Interiors in Winnipeg where she worked for 38 years, retiring as General Manager for the largest Office Furniture company in western Canada. The last ten years, Lewine had spent the winters in southern Texas where she really enjoyed her home away from home meeting new friends and participating in a lot of outdoor activities. It was in one of her cross boarder trips into Mexico, that she started a Education Sponsorship for a young Mexican girl (Michelle Lopex) putting her through high school and University. Michelle is now on her own working as a child psychologist. Lewine was very proud of her little girl, always keeping in close contact with each other. Lewine loved to entertain and cook big meals for her guests. Turkey and ham with all the trimmings were always on the menu. Her second freezer had a spare turkey in it for unexpected guests who were always welcomed. Lewine had many friends, but she also had some very close girl friends that drove her to her cancer treatments, brought her groceries, prescriptions and were there for her during her health issues and pandemic restrictions. The family is very, very grateful that you were there for her. We can’t thank you enough, especially Joanne Donnelly and Colette O’Reilly who were constantly at her bed side right to the end. Special thanks to Lewine’s caregivers, doctors, nurses and staff at both Riverview Health Centre and Grace Hospice for the excellent care Lewine received this past year. Cremation has taken place and a private service will be held when the family can gather in Quinton, Saskatchewan where her ashes will be placed on top of her Mother’s Grave. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lewine can be made either to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation; the Grace Hospital Foundation; or a charity of your choice.
