Dear Cynthia,
Please accept my deep condolences for the passing of Steve. I met him through Algis Baronas in 2000. I had the luxury to share with Steve and you couple of Christmas parties at Al's house. Those memories are kept as treasure.
Steve gave me strong support and I kept him in touch once a year when I sent my family Christmas card. I will miss Steve dearly.
I hope the wonderful memories from Steve and the support of family and friends will give you the strength to navigate such difficult times.
My best regards,
Alberto Vargas

As friends of Dan, and as architects, we have met Steve a few times in Montreal, and remember him warmly. He came across as passionate about what he did, outgoing, exuberant and genuinely interested in us, our ideas, our work and our lives. It is not a coincidence that even in these few brief meetings, Steve left such a lasting positive impression. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife Cynthia, to the family and to our good friend Dan, to Catherine and to Jules and Paige. We will remember Steve fondly.

I’m a friend of Dan, and I can say with a tear in my eye and joy in my heart that Steve will be remembered with fondness and admiration by all of Dan’s Montreal gang. Steve was a friend to us all, and his visits to la belle province with Cindy were always an occasion to gather and celebrate. Sending love and condolences, Julia

I will always remember Steve for being such a great mentor to me. He took me on as a young intern and I learned a great deal from him over my years at his office. I came to appreciate his ability to see the possibilities in every project that came our way, even the ones that seemed quite ordinary at first. He used to draw these finely detailed speculative perspective sketches to explore various aspects of a design - each one a refinement of the previous one. Beyond architecture, his breadth of knowledge and wide range of interests always surprised me. In retrospect, I don’t think I fully appreciated the total of Steve’s remarkable qualities.
Cindy, Daniel and family, I wish you my sincerest condolences.

Steve Cohlmeyer was a generous friend and advisor. When I approached him about my lofty project idea many years ago, rather than laugh it off, he volunteered to help me take it as far as it could go. I trusted his instincts and advice, which were always plain spoken, insightful and enthusiastic. I was ever hopeful my project would come to fruition, partly so I would have the opportunity to continue working with both Steve and Cindy. Although not in recent years, I remember several times meeting up with Steve, Cindy and Coffee while they were out walking, and there was always time for a brief catch-up. Thank you, Steve. Rest easy, my friend.

Cindy, Daniel and family .... It does not seem like decades have passed since the days of Deer Lodge Place, babysitting a young Daniel, and watching you create your beautiful home, both inside and out, just down the street from where I lived. I was so sad to learn of Steve’s passing (to me you will always be “Cindy and Steve” ... apologies for not adopting the more proper names you have come to be known as!). Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Thinking of you.

We join your Winnipeg community in grieving for this lovely man. He possessed a keen intellect that was never harsh with those of us who were trying to follow his nimble thought processes. He was always miles ahead! Steve, we will miss you, with love.

Dear Cynthia,
Claire and I extend to you and your family our most sincere condolences on the passing away of Stephen. We can imagine the void he leaves in your family; his departure also represents a huge loss for both the community at large and the architectural profession. He has contributed greatly to the improvement and embellishment of our environment.
My several and close collaborations with him, especially in the early years, were always pleasant; he was intellectually engaging, extremely devoted to his art, talented, very congenial and a man of principle. His departure is a great loss to all of us. We share your grief.

I'm really sorry that you've gone, Steve, but I'm glad that I managed to bump into you on and off over the past several years, on your street, in Assiniboine Park, and at the Forks. You'll be remembered by your basketball friends as a really nice guy, a darned good player, and the best kind of teammate. Our sincere condolences to Cynthia and the family for your great loss.
