George and I were already fans of the D-Drifters, and became moreso after Penney introduced us to Dave. By invitation, we attended many functions that Dave played at. When George was a DJ, he would tell Dave how he could always get the crowd on the dance floor when he played the D-Drifters’ music, especially the polkas and kolomeykas, at socials and weddings. Our get-togethers were always very special because of his friendliness, sense of humour and kindness. He always gave a huge compliment after a fun night at our house. Thank you Penney for sharing your wonderful husband with us. It was a great honour to be in his presence. I know he has left you with many precious memories. So sorry for your loss.

Penny we are so sorry for your loss and we would like to offer our condolences. I first met Dave when he played at our wedding. I remember Barry being so happy that the band was booked. I had not known of the D-Drifters and I recall being so proud up on the dance floor because they were simply terrific. Of course over the years our friendship grew. Speaking of growing if it grew Dave knew everything about it. Dave could inexplicitly capture your full attention while he explained the difference between the five different potatoes he was growing. But it his warm genuine contagious smile that we will miss the most. - Ben and Bonnie Schmidt

I met Dave in 1968 when I moved to Winnipeg. The D-Drifters were the number one bar band in town and we had the same agent. Dave always had a calm aura about him and though our paths crossed infrequently, I always considered him a good musician and a friend. When I was recording my "Women" album, I chose Maddock studio with Dave as co-producer and over the years spent time with him on other projects that I was hired to play for. I will always remember him for his quiet wisdom. Thanks, Dave. Rest in Peace, my friend.

The first studio I ever recorded in was Maddock, still a teen, on a trip with a band I was in from our home town (Dryden, Ont.) I always thought Dave was a great guy, and I was completely amazed be the whole 'recording studio' experience. Our band recorded nine songs there, but I came up on my own and recorded one I had written, and I remember Dave being not to keen on a chord change coming out of a particular section. Musically, it didn't make sense, but it was too late at the recording stage to re-write it and at that age, I couldn't have anyway.
But I'll always remember that (I DID ask Dave for his opinion, he gave me a straight up honest answer) ... I'm recorded my own solo project in my own studio now, for the first time ever, that song is going on it, and about 3 months ago, a 'corrected' and much better transition in the song (called Kathy's Song) has now been written. It probably never would have, if Dave didn't mention what he did almost 40 years ago, And I can really feel a pat on the back from Dave now. Just a little something I'll never forget, I thought I'd share... He will be missed by many I am sure.
My most sincere and deepest condolences to the family.

My sincere condolences to Penney and family members. I first met Dave when I became a member of the original D-Drifters-5 as the saxophone player. I believe Dave was 16 years of age and I was 17. I can still remember my audition to join the group and the many hours of practice in the living room of Dave's parents house. Even at that age Dave was a very talented musician and I had the privilege of performing with one of the most accomplished musicians that I have known. Our travels together and the many performances at weddings, concerts and TV shows including a live performance at the Ford Auditorium in Detroit, Michigan are experiences that I will never forget.
Although my professional career required me to move from Winnipeg and leave the group I always considered Dave to be a very special person and a good friend. There were many experiences and many stories that we shared and Dave was a big part of my own musical career.
Dave will be missed and remembered. He was a great contributor to the Winnipeg music scene. My thoughts and feelings are with him now. Rest in Peace, Dave. May God be with you. Andy and Verna Pokolinski.

Canada has lost one of its premier musicians and performers. Dave and his band set the pace for entertainers all across North America. Rest in peace, and thanks for making our country and our industry better.

Dear Penney and family,
A loving tribute to an unforgettable man . . . this poem by Henry David Thoreau comes to mind as I watch and listen to Dave . . . "Every blade in the field - Every leaf in the forest - lays down its life in its season as beautifully as it was taken up". With deepest sympathy to you and deepest respect for Dave . . . he took up this life beautifully. Much love, Lucille Meisner

I used to go to Club Regent Jaguar’s Lounge and listen to the D Drifters perform and they would play all kinds of music. I admired Dave’s accordian playing. Him and Yogi would play and sing some of their famous songs. It was a real pleasure to go and listen. I have some of the D Drifters CDs and LPS that I will cherish forever. Dave you will be missed by all who loved Ukrainian music. My sincere condolences to Dave’s wife Penney and his family. Dave and his brother Tony and Yogi are having a party for all up in Heaven. . I used to attend the zemovy at the Legion on Henderson Highway and the D Drifters were there. A real good time and lots of memories.I also used to go to Legion 141 and listen to the D Drifters on Saturdays. The music world has lost a true icon. A beautiful video tribute to a wonderful man.
