I just learned of Doug's passing and my heart sank. I had the great pleasure of working with Doug with the Banff Heritage Corporation in the late 1990's. He was such a delight to work with and very insightful. He instilled in me an interest in architecture and taught me much of what I know about it. Thanks Doug. Your contributions and mentorship are so much appreciated. Your contributions to saving Banff's built heritage cannot be understated. You touched so many.
Now you are designing castles in the sky.

Dear Donna and Family:
I wish to convey my sincerest condolences on the loss of Doug. His legacy will forever live on.
I had the privilege of having Doug as my Professor and Mentor while at the U of M; working for him at Number 10 Architectural Group, serving on a number of Committees with him at the Alberta Architects Association; and enjoying his presence at many Architectural functions such as the Banff Sessions, AGM's, and at our Class Reunions (class of '71) _ the latest at Baker Creek. Barb and I were so very delighted to drive him home from there and to meet you and be privy to your amazing art collection.
I learned so much from Doug over all these years and did so appreciate his advice and direction.
He was always the gentleman with such a great smile and so welcoming.
We will miss him, but will never forget him. I was so fortunate to have known him
Our love to all of you

I am deeply sorry to hear of Professor Gillmor's passing. I was a student of his at the University of Manitoba in the late 1960's and fondly remember him as a very kind and insightful design critic in a faculty that was generally quite brutal and where students were often treated with disrespect. He was the only professor that I recall who consistently treated me well and I was extremely grateful for that; I think we all were. He was also the only professor who was a partner in a well-established practice and he earned my respect, both for the work he did and for his professional demeanor. He was a very talented architect and could have done anything he wanted to do, but he chose to teach and devoted so much of his life to that. I can say that we were all the better for the path he chose and I shed a tear in memory of him today.

Doug is the reason I returned to Calgary and the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) in 1985. He welcomed me back to EVDS as the Architecture Program Secretary as he was the Architecture Program Director. Those were the happiest and most rewarding years of my working career and, again, when we were "teamed up" when he was Acting Dean. After Doug retired, we would meet for lunch and there was always lots of laughter as we'd reminisce over work incidents and events.
But Doug willingly took on another role and became my "Alberta Dad". I lost my Dad suddenly in 1983 and whenever I needed a Dad's advice, I went to Doug. He was always there for me and his friendship and kind support helped shape me to the person I am today.
I will cherish my memories of Doug and he will always be in my heart. I will remember his wonderful smile and his wave that greeted me before I was close enough for a hug or the last thing when we parted ways.
Donna....Fred and I send you and your family our love, hugs and deepest sympathy.

Sorry to hear of Doug's passing. As youths we spent many an hour playing music with Dave and hiking around their beautiful place near Cochrane. I remember Doug would soak in every minute of our music, revelling in each note with a big smile on his face, you could feel the love and support in his heart for Dave and I think he even quite enjoyed our off the wall humour. We were always welcomed with open arms and considered it our second home. He will be missed but most certainly not forgotten.

I first got to know Doug when I arrived at Environmental Design in 1975. Doug had been asked to introduce me to the Faculty and what a wonderful start that was. It was always a joy to listen to Doug talk about design and I always admired his enthusiasm and love of architecture and the larger field of design. His incredible legacy is a great testament to his skills and leadership in the field. On another level Delphine and I got to know Doug and Donna quickly after we arrived in Calgary. We remember very fondly many great evenings of laughter and the “occasional” glass of wine. I will always remember the Dean’s dinners where I was assigned as the sous sous chef and the incredible food that was produced in such a great environment. We are indeed fortunate to have been able to spend some time with Doug and Donna in the latter years. He truly was a gentleman in every respect of the term and a gracious host and friend. We can only imagine how Donna and the family will miss Doug. Delphine, Phil Elder, Janet Keeping and I will be getting together for lunch next week and we will be certain to toast you good friend. May you rest in peace and redesign wherever you are.

I had the pleasure of working with Doug for several years when I was the Chair of the Banff Heritage Corporation. I was always impressed with his knowledge, understanding and pleasant ways. He was such an integral part of the Corporation, dedicating thousands of hours to assist us, as we struggled to preserve heritage buildings here in Banff. His work on the Banff Heritage Inventory was monumental and his Town of Banff Lifetime Heritage Award was well deserved.
I will remember him as a gentleman, with a super smile and chuckle and as a friend, confidant and comrade in heritage preservation. I wish you comfort with many wonderful memories of a life well-lived for family, community and country.
His legacy will live on through all of us.

Dear Don, Alison and Families,
Please accept my condolences on the death of your wonderful father Doug. My father and mother were full of admiration for him. Soon after moving to Banff, in 1993 or so, I asked Doug for his thoughts on design in our national park. Doug mentioned one thing which realy stuck, and I paraphrase:
Our national parks are important concepts and contributions to civilization. The evolution of that concept in Canada emerged here in Banff in the period from the 1880s-1925, and we should do everything we can to protect the homes, the physical artifacts of how people lived in that period when they were developing these conservation ideals. Many of those buildings were simple. Those people wanted to protect nature unimpeded for future generations.
As with good design, protecting nature is a beautiful concept. We hold the torch now.

It is with sadness that I heard of Doug’s passing. As a student of architecture in EVDS during the late 1970s Doug was both my advisor and chair of my MDP committee and his sage advice and support were greatly appreciated. In later years, I served as the provincial advisor on the Banff Heritage Corporation alongside Doug. We would meet at the Petro Can on Hwy 1 south of Cochrane to car pool to Banff together. Our conversations to and from the mountains are cherished memories. My condolences to Donna and family.

Janet and I are heartbroken about Doug's death and offer sad condolences to his family and many friends. We came to the EVDS Faculty in 1973 and had the enormous pleasure of being friends with Doug and Donna.
Doug was creative, smart, and kind - a true gentleman. I think he and the rest of our jolly sailing crew (Elder, Detomasi, Winter, Ross, Revel) spent some of the happiest evenings of our lives exploring B. C.'s Gulf Island and Desolation Sound. Indeed, one of the crew said the best part of the trips was after the anchor dropped and gourmet suppers and hilarious conversations ensued. A photo of Pier Review and crew hangs prominently on our wall in Toronto.
Doug's obituary reminds us of the stellar contributions he made to the Faculty, the profession and the many students he mentored with insight and good humour.
He was one of my favourite colleagues and memories of him will live on in all of us.
