Nichole was a shining light.
I met Nichole when I travelled to Chad to work with MSF. I entered my mud hut room and saw a clipping of the free press posted on the wall, I rapidly ran out of my room asking if a Winnipegger had been here before me and it was then that my colleagues mentioned Nichole!!
After midwifing there for 9 months, I eventually returned home and I was on the hunt to find Nichole! It wasn't very difficult to connect. And at one point we even lived on the same street. We were two peas in a pod, far beyond staying in the same room during our work in Chad, we shared love of live music, the outdoors, cycling and caring for folks with substance use disorders. It wasn't long after we met in 2008 that I realized I had made a lifelong friend.
I miss you today Nichole and on many days, and I think about you and wonder what your next adventure has been all about... I miss our conversations and visits.
Big love.

My parents, Dr. Jack McPhedran and Mabel McPhedran of Neepawa, Manitoba were friends with Nichole’s parents. Nichole was quite a bit younger than I was so it was an honour and pleasure when we met through mutual friends after I returned to Winnipeg. Nichole introduced me to The Main Street Project and I was deeply impressed by her values, practice and service - a woman who gave generously of her expertise, accomplishing much every day! Thank you Nichole and condolences to those you had to leave, for now. Marilou (Senator McPhedran)

Nichole was a wonderful physician, teacher, mentor, and human being. I'm so grateful to have known her and will always remember how she fostered my interest in medicine, social justice, and global health, as well as our trip to Norway House.

My deepest condolences to Nichole’s family and circle of friends. I was honoured to call Nichole a friend and colleague. In her humble, non-judgemental, personable way, she taught me much about understanding trauma, and her insights and approach opened the door for many to understand their own experience and move on in a healing process. I honour her great courage and selflessness in face of challenges. I will remember you always, Nichole! Thank you.

My condolences to Nichole’s family, friends, colleagues and patients. What a huge loss! I was fortunate enough to have worked with Nichole for a time while at Nine Circles. She treated everyone with kindness, compassion, and as her equal. I am not surprised that her last act of selflessness was organ donation. By giving the gift of life, it provides others with comfort, knowing that she lives on. The world has been made a better place because of Nichole.

To all of Nichole's family, and her vast yet intimate circle of friends, colleagues and admirers, Nichole was and is a force for good. I find it hard to sum up all that Nichole gave to others of herself, and perhaps that is the learning. Nichole offered her best to others, in medical practice, in accepting people as they were, appreciating art and nature, in making connections, keeping relationships strong, and living life with curiosity, compassion, energy and resolve. Last weekend I watched design films at Cinematheque, a place where I would run into Nichole. As I sat in my assigned seat, I glanced at the arm rest, which has Nichole's name engraved. Her gifts and presence endure in beautiful lasting ways.

I did not know Nichole really well but our paths crossed at a northern nursing station , skating on the river trails and trips with Charleswood Ski Club. I even got to share the lovely casserole she had prepared for Pascal on our hiking trip last summer. I so admired how she dealt with her diagnosis and lived her life to the fullest as long as she could. RIP.

I learned much from Nichole – her enthusiasm, caring, and commitment to others was ever-present and, dare I say it, infectious. I marvelled at the challenges she took on in her overseas work and dedication to supporting the health of people in remote and urban communities. Truly a healer, the medicine she administered most often was compassion. She will be remembered fondly forever.

Sooooo sad to see this! What a wonderful person and human being, sooo dedicated and caring! She used to refer patients to me (a Urologist) and her dad was my role model. She did such great work on behalf of patients and helped set up the addictions center on Main Street. We sat beside her at one of the Addictions talks she helped arrange at U of M and we got to meet her. Surely a privilege to know someone so dedicated to all the problems of society. We will miss you and your good work.....

I met Dr. Riese when I was working with Health Canada and she was with the NMU. We were at a number of meetings in Norway House and Winnipeg and travelled a lot on the same planes. She was a very knowledgeable and wonderful person. She did so much real good stuff for so many. And by the way, my wife was also diagnosed in 2019 with ALS and passed away in December, 2020. Peace to you all. Jim Mair

Nichole (I would always call her “Dr. Riese” until she insisted I simply call her Nichole which I then agreed and said “Dr. Nichole” just to bug her) was an amazing person as well all know. Her ALS diagnosis was devastating as she had so much more to offer. Her kindness and generosity will never be forgotten. I will always be honoured to have shared only a small part of Nichole’s life while working with her at AFM. I will always treasure our chats! Nichole made our world a better place for many …Sincerely …. her red neck buddy at AFM Women’s “Joanne”.
