Karen and I were born cousins, days apart, and we were always close. She was my favorite cousin with the beautiful singing voice. She even cut a record at the CN station!
She always said that I introduced her to Bruce. Karen and Bruce had a wonderful family, Lorna, Jeff and Jason and the grandchildren followed. Karen would often share pictures of their family get togethers and holidays and even the dogs! She was so proud of all of them yet she worried all the time. We decided that was part of being a mom and grandma.
She had a great laugh and did it often. I miss her.
Karen, I love you.

I am so very saddened to hear of Karen’s passing. We first met in 1952 when we were 3 years old– we called each other “my first best friend”. We lived on the same block on Jessie Avenue in Winnipeg and spent many hours/days/years playing. I remember painting at a picnic table in her backyard, and endless hours swinging on their “huge” porch swing. It was magical! Karen and I ended up in different grades in school because of the Nov 30th cutoff for entering Grade 1. Being the “elder” friend, I remember walking her to kindergarten when I was in Grade 1. We stayed close during those years. She sang “Love Me Tender” at my 8th birthday party. She had a lovely voice. Karen was always so gentle and her smile could light up the world. Over the years, I would have recognized her anywhere by that smile! She moved away shortly after that, but then we did too and we both ended up in River Heights. We were in square dancing class in about Grade 5 or 6. We went to the same high school. After high school, we lost touch. Karen married Bruce and spent the years looking after her family. I moved to Vancouver. We connected on Facebook several years ago. Then one day, she called. She and Bruce were thinking of house-sitting on Gabriola Island, where I currently live. Wonderful! It was so great to reconnect and she was just as kind and lovely as ever. And I got to know Bruce – he’s a gem! They called me a week ago from the hospital and we talked about them coming back to the coast. I am devastated that we can’t see each other again. Bless you my friend. Love you.
Your first best friend, Donna

Dennis and I were so saddened when we heard that we had lost our dear friend Karen. We loved her for her positive view of life, her ambition, her deep appreciation of friends, and her deep love of her family. We will cherish the lovely memories of many evenings at the lake with her and Bruce, sharing a bottle (or two) of red wine and sharing stories about our children and grandchildren and the many other joys of life that we were privileged to experience. And, in particular I will remember the evening she sang a Patsy Cline song for us - she had a beautiful voice like Patsy! And Dennis will miss the peanut butter cookies she would bake for him.
Dennis and I have found comfort in knowing that she will be included in God’s promise of a resurrection of lost loved ones (John 5:29); and the hope for the future recorded at Psalm 37:10, 11 “Just a little while longer and the wicked will be no more…But the meek will possess the earth and they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace”; and verse 29 “The righteous will possess the earth, and they will live forever on it.” Karen will sing and laugh again. It is a promise from God.
