Obituary of John Douglas Lake
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the family announces the passing of John Douglas Lake on January 1, 2023, surrounded by family at the St. Boniface hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 74.
John was born on April 4, 1948 in Winnipeg Manitoba and grew up in the north end. As a young boy he spent many summers out at Bird Lake where he began his love of the outdoors.
John attended Sisler High School where he excelled at track and field and basketball. There he met the love of his life, Vicky.
John and Vicky were married May 5, 1973 and celebrated 49 years of marriage together. They enjoyed travelling and cheering on their local sports teams. They would often stay up to the wee hours watching endless rugby matches on TV.
John was a longtime member of the Winnipeg Wasps Rugby Football Club. As a member of the Wasps he represented Manitoba on several provincial teams and toured the British Isles on three occasions. He was very proud that his children ended up sharing his love of the game and went on to play high school and club rugby.
Hunting and fishing were John’s passions. He took pride in being able to instill to his children the love of the outdoors.
John was a longtime member of the St. Johns Cantius Fraternal Aid Society. From there he formed many friendships and spent many hours playing crib and socializing.
After 40 plus years in the construction distribution industry John retired from Brock White Canada.
Left to cherish John’s memory is his wife Victoria of 49 years; sons Glenn (Christina), Scott (Christa) and Sean; and daughter Heather (Stephen). John adored his grandkids Abigail, Mackenzie, Isaac, Lilah, Gavin, Anistyn and Amelia who will miss him dearly, especially the innocent teasing. He is also survived by his sisters Brenda and Barbara; brother Fred; and many nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his parents Frederick and Corrine; and his brother Alexander.
