Obituary of Henryk Janus

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Henryk Janus on February 7th, 2023, at the age of 86. Beloved husband of Teresa, father of three, grandfather of seven, and great-grandfather of one, Henryk, surrounded by his entire family, celebrated his wife’s 80th birthday only two days earlier before peacefully passing in his sleep at home. Henryk was born in the Kielce region of Poland on August 4th, 1936. Having lost his own father at the young age of 12, he was forced to grow up quickly. He was always known for being a hard worker, quick learner, detail oriented, and most of all, hopelessly devoted to his friends and family. On August 6th, 1961, Henryk married his beloved wife, Teresa. Together, they immigrated to Canada in the winter of 1964 and started a new life with their relatives in Winnipeg. They went on to have three children – Joanna, Victor, and Tommy – quickly assimilating into Winnipeg’s Polish Community while recognizing the importance of higher education to their children’s future success. Henryk’s drive, determination, and hard work ethic was evident from the moment he set foot in Canada. In addition to working in Winnipeg’s garment industry, and North America’s leading coach manufacturer, MCI, he taught himself basic carpentry skills by observing general contractors on local jobsites on evenings and weekends. Thanks to him, and his brother-in-law, Stan Pacak, many homes in the family were built under their direction – including the Janus Family home in Winnipeg. Henryk’s passion for food and family was always on display. Over the course of decades, he perfected his own Polska Kielbasa recipe – a dinner table staple during important holidays and family events. He made sure to spend his time teaching his children, grandchildren, son-in-law, close family and friends his secret recipe so it could be passed on from generation to generation. Henryk was well known throughout Winnipeg’s Polish Community. He was a devoted member of Holy Ghost Parish, serving not only its Knights of Columbus Chapter, but also the Saint Cecelia Parish Choir. Even after 59 years in Canada, Henryk continued to value the importance of religion and Polish traditions in his family’s life. Predeceased by his parents, Stanislaw and Antonina; sisters, Irena and Helena, and brother, Kazimierz, Henryk is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa; daughter Joanna and husband Tom Malkiewicz, along with their children Alexandra, Christopher and his wife Janelle Lafantaisie and grandson, Roman; son Victor and wife Andrea Hinther and their children Luke and Gabriella; son Tommy and wife Beata Walerych and their children Maksymilian, Aleksander and Victoria; his two remaining sisters in Poland – Janina and Wladyslawa; the Pacak Family, the Dasiewicz Family, the Piatek Family, the Malkiewicz family, the Hinther family, the Walerych family and many life-long friends. Please join us in prayer as we say goodbye to Henryk on Friday, February 17th, 2023. The funeral mass will be held at Holy Ghost Parish, 342 Pritchard Ave, at 10:00am, preceded by rosary prayers beginning at 9:30am. May he rest in eternal peace and let his beautiful life pass on to those waiting to welcome him home. The family would like to express their most sincere thanks to Dr. Peter Bialy for his continued compassionate care over these past few years and to all friends and family for their generous food offerings. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Henryk’s memory to Holy Ghost Parish.
