I offer my sincere condolences to the family of Dr. Joseph Kagan. Dr. Kagan worked for many years at the Saint Boniface General Hospital as a general surgeon. I practised surgery at the same hospital and frequently met him in the operating room lounge. He was always ready to say hello and join a conversation, usually providing memorable wisdom to junior colleagues (of which I was one) and students. He was a very conservative gentleman in that he would think very carefully before speaking, offering advice, or deciding that surgery was an appropriate decision for a particular patient. His integrity was unquestioned. He was respected by those who worked with him in the operating room and returned that respect. He did not tolerate mediocrity. May he rest in peace.
