Obituary of Ruth Schroen
On Sept 14, 2019 our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ruth Schroen passed away peacefully at the age of 95 years.
She is lovingly remembered and will be missed by her children Phillip, Lori (David), and Judy (Raymond), 11 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren, and by her surviving siblings, Edith Frieling, Wally Hubers, and Heinz Duesterhoeft, and many other extended family.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Max, daughter Christa, grandson Tyler, her parents August and Wanda, and by siblings Art, Hilde, Ellie, Arvid, and Gerda.
She was born April 28, 1924 in Ohseln, Latvia. She travelled with her family to Canada, eventually settling in Alberta. It was in Northern Alberta where she met and married the love of her life, Max Schroen, on July 1, 1951. Max and Ruth eventually settled with their family in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her marriage covered a span of 53 year until the passing of Max in 2004.
Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, never hesitating to care for or visit with grandchildren and great grandchildren and of course, making sure everyone was well fed. No one left Ruth’s house hungry, as anyone who knew her could attest. She was an amazing cook and baker, always filling the house with the most amazing aromas. Ruth expressed her creativity by knitting beautiful and intricately patterned sweaters, hats, mitts, and scarves, some of which we still put to good use. She created embroidered pictures and wall hangings and wrote poetry. She loved to read, write letters, and keep up on current affairs. Ruth kept a garden with flowers and vegetables, canning the bounty harvested from her garden. Mom loved Sunday afternoons at the beach under a shade tree with a magazine, and then spending time with Max at the cottage busying herself by picking dandelions and cleaning the windows till they sparkled. In the latter years she would eagerly join in with the family events whether it was at the cottage, birthday celebrations, or holiday gatherings. Ruth took great pride in her home and her family.
The Family extends their gratitude to the staff at the Riverview Health Care Centre (CD 1 and DC4) for their service and kindness, special mention to nurse Krystina, whose compassion and dedication towards our mom was outstanding. They also thank their family and friends for their support at this difficult time.
A private celebration of life will be held at a future date.
