I knew Ian as a teenager through his volunteer work with the Manitoba Astronomy Club, an astronomy club for children and youth based at the Manitoba Planetarium in the 1980s. He was a warm, friendly person who seemed to genuinely enjoy people and sharing knowledge. A wonderful person for any young person interested in the sky and the stars. I am very sorry to learn of his passing.

My sincere condolences for the loss of a most wonderful, kind, empathetic Ian who never stopped giving. I had the privilege to work and interact with Ian for so many years at the UofM on the General Astronomy Course Labs and Observing sessions, 'astro-tea' regular group meetings, 'astro-coffee' at Degrees (with Jennifer and the Andersons), and many social astro events and strategic planning. He also generously and genuinely helped us with the organization of two major conferences held at UofM (CASCA2004 and CASCA2016). He will be remembered by his wonderful smile that never left his face, and his contagious passion for Astronomy, Math, cats and (good) coffee. May he be resting in peace.
Thinking of Cathy and all of Ian's loved ones during this moment of big loss to the UM and Winnipeg communities.

We are so sorry to learn that Ian is gone – hopefully up to the stars he loved so much. We found him to be a gentle soul with an irrepressible twinkle in his eye. Ian always wore a warm smile and somewhat bemused look on his face that testified to his keen sense of humour, and of the absurd. It was always a pleasure to share a few hours with Ian at Christmas or anytime. We are thankful to have known him and will miss him. As with all departed friends, we wish we’d had more time, but remember the time we did have with Ian with fondness.
Cowboys don’t say goodbye so let’s just say “see you later Ian”
Hugs to Cousin Cathy, from Nick and Rita Green, and family.
