Ken Johnson

Obituary of Ken Johnson

Ken was the oldest of six children born to Gardiner and Connie Johnson. His father was in the military, so they lived in many different cities in Canada, the United States, and England. While living in Winnipeg, his family moved back to Ontario. Ken didn’t like the idea of an extra grade of school, so he decided to stay in Winnipeg. He always claimed he never left home - home left him. There he eventually met his wife, Sheila.

In 1967, Ken started working for Greater Winnipeg Gas Co. And stayed throughout their various ownership changes, the last of which was Manitoba Hydro. His career spanned over 40 years of service starting in the mail room, moving to meter reading and ending in the service department as a gas fitter.

Ken and Sheila went on a European bus tour in the spring of 2008, which we really enjoyed and we were looking forward to doing it again in the future.

We were blessed with two boys, Robert and Adam.  During their growing years Ken was the assistant coach for the many sports they participated in, mainly hockey and soccer.

Ken and Sheila were so delighted when Robert and Adam made them the grandparents of Emily, Henry, Charlotte, and Connie.

Ken was predeceased by his parents Gard. and Connie; his in-laws Ernie and Anna; brother Roy; brothers-in-law Ernie Kowbel and Gord Wilson; sister-in-law Wanda.; and nephews Danny and Paul.

Ken first began to suffer from heart failure in 2008 within the first year of his retirement. It was controlled mostly by medication until six months ago when a steady decline in his health started.

Sadly, his life ended peacefully and quietly in St. Boniface Hospital on July 10th, 2023.
