Obituary of Joan Sonja Baluk

We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother on August 3, 2023 with her family by her side at Holy Family Home.

Left to forever cherish Mom’s memory are her children Darlene (Luke), Anthony, Walter (Rita); six grandchildren James (Fatima), Crystal (Ryan), Justin, Candice, Samantha and Brett; five great grandchildren Carson, Austin, Vienna, Leland and Mia; brothers Maurice and Peter; sisters Helen, Irene, Elsie and Stella; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mom was predeceased by her loving daughter Beverly; her parents John and Annie; siblings Steve, Joan, Mary; and her precious beloved cat “Princess”, that she adored for over 15 years.

Mom was born and raised in Sarto, Manitoba on the family farm.  She moved to Winnipeg at an early age.  She had worked in factories, bakeries and restaurants.  Her final place of employment was with the W.R.H.A. as a home support worker.  She retired in 2004 with over 20 years of service.

Mom had a good life, but a hard one.  She raised four children all by herself.  She was a great Mom and a great cook.  Mom was best known for her Ukrainian dishes and her baking.  We could always count on her for her delicious homemade borscht, perogies, cabbage rolls and head cheese.  She truly loved spending time with family and friends and getting together over the holidays.

In Mom’s younger years, she enjoyed going to family weddings and socials.  Everyone who knew Mom adored her.  Her smile would light up any room.  Mom loved to socialize.  She always looked forward to putting on her new outfit and going out dancing.

Her dedication to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, was endless.  They were her pride and joy in life.

We will forever cherish the love and memories Mom gave us.  We find comfort in knowing that she is in a better place and watching over us.

Mom, you remain forever in our hearts.  We love you, miss you and thank you for the cherished moments we shared.

Until we meet again!

The family would like to thank all the staff at Holy Family for the care she received, with special thanks to nurses Marcie and Andriy and Health Care Aide Nataliya.

As per Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held.

A private family gathering will take place at a later date.
