Obituary of Russell Patrick McCort

Russell Patrick McCort, 70, of Winnipeg, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2024, after a lengthy illness.

Russell was born on January 19, 1953, to Charles and Freida McCort (nee Katsky), in Winnipeg. Growing up, Russell loved spending many summers at Falcon Lake and other parts of Lake of the Woods with his Aunt Elsie, Uncle Fred, and cousin Gilbert.

Russell married the love of his life, Janice Elaine Demski, on November 17, 1979 and had 44 wonderful years of marriage together. They had three children son Adam Joel, son David Samuel and daughter Melonie Rose.

As a young man, Russell trained as a carpenter. He then worked both as an independent carpenter, and in HSC hospital surgical equipment sanitation and healthcare garment sanitation for 43 years. Russell was a very hard worker and took a lot of pride in the work he did.

At home, Russell enjoyed doing many home renovation projects himself. He also had a green thumb and developed a beautiful garden at his family home in Transcona and later Elmwood.

Russell and his wife Janice were devoted friends to Janice's aunt Joyce White and uncle John White. Russell and Janice were also primary caregivers to Joyce and John in their later years. Russell had a great compassion for people struggling with mental illness, since at times, he and his mother also struggled with mental illness.

Russell had a passion for history, theology, and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Russell was also fascinated by science and science fiction, particularly Star Trek, and introduced his children at a young age to the wonders of science through storytelling.

Russell was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Rhonda McCort. Russell is survived by his siblings; Randy McCort, Rod McCort, Jim McCort, and Robin McCort, as well as by many nieces and nephews. Russell is survived by his wife Janice and his children Adam, David, and Melonie.
