Obituary of Gerald William Galley

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gerald William Galley, affectionately known as Gerry, on February 24, 2024, at his home in Winnipeg at the age of 76. Born on March 29, 1947, in Barrie, Ontario, Gerry’s early years were a tapestry of movement and adventure, reflective of his father’s career in the Airforce. This nomadic childhood included memorable stays in Zweibrücken, Germany, and Edinburgh, Scotland, instilling in Gerry a profound appreciation for different cultures and the simple joys of family road trips through Europe in a Volkswagen filled with laughter and the aroma of roadside tea.

Gerry’s teenage years were spent in Kamloops and PEI, where he navigated the complexities of adolescence with charm and ease, culminating in his crowning as Prom King. A testament to his adventurous spirit, Gerry joined the Airforce in 1968, serving with distinction both in Canada and on United Nations missions abroad. His service was characterized by a deep commitment to his country and the values of peace and solidarity among nations.

In 1984, Gerry’s life took a joyous turn when he met his soulmate, Gerdy. Their marriage on December 19, 1984, was the beginning of a partnership filled with love, travel, and shared experiences. Gerry’s career took them from the radar site in Lowther, northern Ontario, to Edmonton, where he retired from the regular forces before joining the reserve. In 1999, they settled in Winnipeg, drawing closer to Gerry’s family roots and embarking on numerous voyages to the Netherlands to connect with his beloved’s family.

Gerry’s passion for life was evident in his love for food and his unwavering desire to live on his own terms. His stories, filled with humor and wisdom, will be cherished by those who knew him. Although the dream to celebrate a 40th wedding anniversary remained unfulfilled, the nearly four decades of love, laughter, and companionship Gerry and his wife shared will remain a beacon of their enduring love.

Gerry leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and the joy of embracing life’s journey with an open heart. He will be profoundly missed by his wife, family, and a wide circle of friends whose lives he touched with his generosity, spirit, and unwavering kindness.

As we bid farewell to Gerry, let us honor his memory by living fully, loving deeply, and embracing every adventure life offers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity that was close to Gerry’s heart, reflecting his lifelong commitment to serving others.

Farewell, Gerry. Your journey continues in the hearts of those you’ve left behind.
