Baby-Friendly Business: Starting a Family in Today’s Working World
WINNIPEG, Canada – In this day and age, many women in business feel like they’re racing the clock to start a family, while simultaneously trying to build their careers.
But maternity leave can impact a woman’s career, especially if she runs her own business. Taking an extended leave can put a woman at a significant disadvantage in a male-dominated industry.
What if you didn’t have to choose between the two? These days, it seems that the only way to maintain a successful business and start a family is to do both at the same time. For Ashley Newton at Alterna Cremation, that’s exactly what she did.
“Maternal birth age is increasing, which you would think would give a woman more time. But it’s more complicated than that,” Ashley writes. “I’m making it work.”
After the birth of her first child, Ashley went right back to work instead of taking maternity leave—and she brought young Winnie with her. She had to juggle the duties of being a new mother, and the demands of running a business. She found a way to do both.
Ashely isn’t the only one facing this dilemma. Across North America, more businesses have begun to embrace a baby-friendly workplace. This culture allows women to start families without sacrificing their career progress in the process.
Women shouldn’t have to choose between advancing their careers and starting a family. As the culture surrounding new mothers in business changes, the workplace is becoming more baby-friendly than ever before.
Clients at Alterna Cremation enjoy having young Winnie present. Perhaps it’s a reminder of the cyclical nature of life; of how, after one life ends, another will begin. Birth and death are natural parts of life.
While we mourn the death of a loved one, we can celebrate the birth of another. When someone is grieving a loss, there may be something comforting about the reminder that life goes on.
