When a death occurs, there are a lot of decisions to make.  In addition to grief and other overwhelming emotions, people close to the deceased also have many practical considerations to navigate.  Funeral or memorial planning, legal paperwork, notifying loved ones, and more may all be part of the process.

Writing an obituary is one aspect of post-death arrangements that can often provoke anxiety.  Sometimes people don’t know how to begin, what to include, or where to turn for assistance.  They may not feel sure if an obituary is necessary or where it is best published.  Or they may simply feel insecure about their writing skills.

At Alterna Cremation, we understand.  And we are here to support you in creating a dignified obituary for your loved one as you navigate the grieving process.

If you need to write an obituary in Winnipeg, here are the resources and services that Alterna Cremation can offer:

Free Obituaries for Our Families

If you opt to publish an obituary for your loved one in the newspaper (even online), you will typically be charged per word.

At Alterna Cremation, a free obituary is included in our Direct Cremation package.  There is no limit on length, plus an online obituary is simple to share and access.

Even if you aren’t planning a funeral or memorial, we strongly encourage you to write an obituary for your loved one.  An obituary allows the community to mark the passing of the deceased and will minimize confusion and inquiries about the death that has occurred.

What To Include in an Obituary

Writing a complete obituary may require a bit of research about the deceased.  Most often, an obituary includes a person’s full name and age as well as when and where they passed away.  It also includes a brief history of their life, names of those whom they are survived by, and information about any upcoming services and/or donation requests.

At Alterna Cremation, we have created The Ultimate Obituary Workbook to help you compile information for the obituary you are writing.  It is a helpful tool for anyone who needs to write an obituary.

Obituary Writing Service

If you have chosen Alterna Cremation as your funeral home and would like support writing an obituary, you can simply complete The Ultimate Obituary Workbook, email or drop it off to us in person, and our funeral director will create a first draft for your review.

This service can remove some of the pressure around writing an obituary while still guaranteeing a professional yet personal outcome.  Of course, you’ll always have the final say; you can just use our service as a starting point.

At Alterna, we are committed to straightforward service with no hidden costs.  We treat our families and those in our care with the utmost respect and dignity.  If you need to write an obituary or are looking for funeral homes in Winnipeg, reach out to us today.
