Woman-Owned & Operated Winnipeg Alternative Funeral Home Passes Five-Year Milestone

WINNIPEG, MB:  Alterna Cremation, an independent alternative funeral home located at 2495 Henderson Highway, passed its five-year anniversary serving the Winnipeg community earlier this fall.  Owned and operated by Ashley Newton, Alterna Cremation served more than 350 families who experienced a death in 2023.  

 

Alterna Cremation was founded by Ashley Newton in response to a need she saw in the community: A need for simple, dignified, and affordable cremation services.  Focused on direct cremation (cremation with no funeral service beforehand), Alterna quickly grew as word spread about its straightforward approach.  Ashley Newton is a one-of-a-kind mom and funeral services director who is beloved for her compassionate and professional dedication to the families she serves.  Today, in addition to direct cremation services, Alterna also offers pre-planning for final arrangements, grief support resources, urns and keepsakes, and more.

In an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated, Alterna Cremation is unique.  Founded, owned, and operated by a team made up entirely of women, the company is redefining the boundaries of the funeral services industry day by day with quiet care and dedication.  This year, Ashley Newton was a finalist for the Women Business Owners of Manitoba Women Entrepreneur of the Year Awards (WEYA), an honour she believes highlights the meaningful work Alterna is bringing to the Winnipeg community at large.  As she reflects on all the families Alterna has served in 2023, she looks forward to many more milestones and years of service to come.
