Obituary of Chad Ryan William Posthumus
Peacefully and surrounded by his loving family, Chad slipped away from us far too soon on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
Chad leaves behind his partner Meagan, parents Charles and Diana, siblings Christina (Akida), Jessie (Magnus), nieces Aliyah and Zaria, and nephew/godson Hendrix, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends across Canada and around the world.
Chad was born February 12th, 1991, in East St. Paul, Manitoba where he attended Bird's Hill School, Robert Andrews School, and River East Collegiate. Chad was a carefree, spirited child who loved the outdoors, swimming, parks, bike rides, and playing with all his toys, especially Lego. Chad began playing several sports at a very early age, including swimming, soccer, hockey, and basketball.
Everyone who knew Chad knew how much he loved basketball. He began his professional career in 2014 with the Chicago Bulls and went on to play in over ten countries, ending with Team Canada and the Winnipeg Sea Bears. Chad was so proud to be playing in his hometown in front of family and friends so its fitting that it was the last jersey he wore.
Chad kept his carefree, adventurous spirit throughout his life and was always looking for the next opportunity to explore and try new things. Despite this love of adventure, he maintained a strong connection to his friends and family in Winnipeg and always found his way back home.
Family was extremely important to Chad, he could often be found at his parent’s house for dinner several times a week, and loved spending time with his siblings, nieces, nephew, and extended family. His family will forever miss the big hugs, movie nights, and constant calls and text messages.
Chad and his partner Meagan met in Winnipeg in 2019 then began dating when they reconnected in Edmonton in 2020. Throughout their relationship they went on several adventures through Saskatoon, Calgary, Kelowna, and Mexico, always living life to the fullest. Chad was so excited to move home to Winnipeg and took great pride in creating their home and beginning to plan their lives together. Some of their favorite things to do included building Lego, playing guitar hero, attending raves, and watching movies.
Chad established numerous friendships during his time in school, many of which he maintained to this day. As a child, Chad and friends could be found playing outdoors, having airsoft gun wars in his parents' basement, and playing video games together.
As an adult, Chad was constantly networking and bringing people together wherever he went. He loved working out and having chats with the guys, endlessly quoting movies back and forth and developing a variety of inside jokes and slang with each of his friends. Chad had a special way of connecting with every individual he met. His kindness and ability to make people feel seen for who they were will be missed by all who knew him.
Chad overcame many obstacles in his life including being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age seven, having Celiac disease, and undergoing several procedures including two hip surgeries. Despite this, he always lived life to the fullest and remained dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle.
Chad was vegetarian for a decade and participated in a wide range of workout and wellness routines. He also advocated for those around him to be as healthy as possible and lived by the motto that you shouldn't wait for tomorrow to do what you can do today.
A celebration of Chad's life will be held on December 6th, 2024, at Springs Church (595 Lagimodiere Blvd.) Doors will open at 3:00 and the service will begin at 3:30.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Breakthrough T1D or a memorial scholarship which will be set up in Chad's honour.
