Obituary of Carter Kenney Graveline
It is with tremendous sadness and grief we announce the passing of Carter Kenney Graveline on November 29, 2024 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Carter is survived by his parents, Jason and Julie; his brothers, Ethan and Leo; and his grandparents Al and Donna Graveline, Robert and Barbara Kenney, and Ted and Joan Paget. He was predeceased by his grandmother Irene Lapensee.
Carter was born on September 14, 2000 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. As the eldest child in a military family, Carter subsequently called Ottawa (Ontario), Lawrencetown (Nova Scotia) then finally Winnipeg home. Carter graduated from Argyle Alternative High School in 2020.
As a teenager, Carter passionately embraced his Metis and Indigenous heritage. Known by his spirit-name of Lightning Thunderbird, his culture was a source of pride, strength and comfort.
Carter was creative and expressive. He was a painter, a musician, a poet and a writer. He was an activist who ardently advocated for the Indigenous and for the marginalized and oppressed.
The family wishes to thank the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, the Emergency Department of the St Boniface Hospital, the ICU at the Grace Hospital and especially, the staff at the MICU at Health Sciences Centre and Transplant Manitoba for treating Carter with dignity and respect.
Carter had opted into the provincial transplant program, a testament to his character and selflessness. His last act was one of incredible generosity and he helped at least four people awaiting organ donation.
In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting causes that were important to Carter: Resource Assistance for Youth, Oak Table or a mental health organization of your choice.
Carter’s Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at 2:00 pm at HMCS Chippawa, 1 Navy Way, Winnipeg. All are welcome to attend.
