Obituary of Harold E. Kane
The family of Harold E. (Skip) Kane is saddened to announce his passing which occurred December 27, 2024, at his residence in Winnipeg following a period of declining health.
Born in Saint John in November, 1933 Skip is pre-deceased by his parents Harold E. and Madeline (Watts) Kane and a younger brother Charles. Also, a very special companion in life after priesthood, Hildegard Sen of Winnipeg. He is survived by his siblings Bob and wife Judy of Rothesay and Barbara of Saint John and several nieces and nephews. Also survived by a very special cousin, Charles Watts of Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Skip (as he was fondly known) was a graduate of St. Vincent’s Boy’s School and later attended St. Mary’s University in Halifax where he obtained both his Bachelor and Masters of Arts degrees. Later in life he attended the London School of Economics, London, UK where he earned his Doctorate.
Following graduation from St. Mary’s in 1958 Skip chose to enter the priesthood becoming a member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) which culminated with his ordination in 1970. He always wanted to be an educator and the Order assigned him several opportunities in Toronto and Winnipeg. In a change in direction the Order appointed Skip to become Rector of St. Paul’s College in Winnipeg, a Catholic school run by the Jesuits which was affiliated with the University of Manitoba.
Skip retired from the priesthood in 1986 and entered civilian life in Winnipeg, working with the Department of Health, Province of Manitoba until his retirement.
Skip enjoyed an active social life in Winnipeg and was fortunate to have had many close friends in the area over the years.
The family would also like to offer very special thanks to Dr. Robin and Michele Sen of Winnipeg who extended to Skip their unconditional support and love for the past several years and for making his life so much more comfortable as his health declined.
Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rothesay, New Brunswick on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 11 am.
