Obituary of Barry Wayne Prentice

It is with great sadness that the family of Barry Wayne Prentice announce their beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Sunday, May 23, 2021 at the age of 82. Barry was born on September 1, 1938 in Souris, Manitoba to Hazel and William (Bill) Prentice. After graduating high school in Souris, Barry departed for Winnipeg where he enrolled in the University of Manitoba to pursue a civil engineering degree. His graduation from the University of Manitoba led Barry to a long career with the Manitoba Highways Department that advanced from “bush assignment” in remote regions of northern Manitoba, to residencies in Dauphin, Lac Du Bonnet, Boissevain and ending as the Regional Director in Steinbach. After retiring, Barry spent several more years in Steinbach, spending time with extended family at the family cabin in Sandy Lake. A recent move into Winnipeg provided an opportunity to be closer to family and events such as the Winnipeg Symphony, where he embraced a lifelong passion for classical music as a season ticket holder. In virtually all of the locations along his journey, Barry was an active member of local charity and volunteer organizations, most notably the Pat Porter Active Living Centre and Lions Club where he held various offices. In Steinbach, a favorite activity was coordinating and participating in the “cook-out” events preparing hot dogs or pancakes for local businesses and their guests. Barry is mourned by his loving wife Ellenor; children Michael (Kim) and Susan; three adoring grandchildren Megan, Avery and Madison. Barry was pre-deceased by his sister Donna. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Barry’s honor to the Pat Porter Active Living Centre (https://www.patporteralc.com/fundraising/). Given current circumstances, there will be no memorial service but a Celebration of Life will be arranged by the family at a later date.
