Obituary of Edward Holt

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved father Edward. Dad passed peacefully on December 14, 2023, in his room at the Fred Douglas Personal Care Home. He was 85.

Dad was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years Ruth in 2020; his daughter Deana in 2022; his sons-in-law Gord in 2010 and Mark in 2023; his parents George and Clarice; sisters Helen and Anne (Ken); his brothers Thomas, James and Alan; and his nephews Brian and Greg.

When mom and dad married in 1958, dad went on to become an Air Traffic Controller. This job moved them (and the ever growing family) from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay to Kenora and back to Winnipeg. After working as an Air Traffic Controller for 33 years he decided to retire. This decision enabled them to eventually become "Snow Birds". They wintered in Mesa, Arizona and summered at the cabin they built (yes THEY built!) in Rainy River, Ontario. Many fantastic family memories were made there.

Dad enjoyed many interests besides puttering at the cabin. These included painting, writing (poetry), and crossword puzzles. But his favourite thing of all was playing guitar and singing. Dad loved music and had very eclectic tastes. From opera, to country, to folk and rock. He loved it all! Among his favourites were Willie Nelson, the Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot and of course the Beatles.

Dad was soft spoken, intelligent and loved to laugh. He had a very dry and sometimes sarcastic wit. (Hence his love of Monty Python).

Left to cherish dad's memory are his children Teresa (Wayne), Judy, Tom (Aynslee), and son in law Bob; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; several in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

We wish to thank the amazing staff at Fred Douglas Lodge for the compassion, kindness and care they provided our dear father.

As per dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services held.
